Apprenticeship Coordinator

Danville Community College developed from two institutions, Danville Technical Institute and the Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute opened in 1936 as Danville Textile School, becoming Danville Technical Institute just after World War II. The Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute first began as an engineering division in 1946 and was later expanded to include the first two years of course work for all engineering, business administration, liberal arts, and science majors. Beginning in the summer of 1966, all programs taught by Danville Technical Institute were brought under the Virginia Department of Community Colleges. Effective July 1, 1968, the Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute merged with the existing community college providing the comprehensive programs now offered.

The Apprenticeship Coordinator serves as the lead contact for apprenticeship development; the coordinator oversees creating the apprenticeship information to be shared with DCC’s partners. This position is responsible for recruiting and supporting businesses in the service region to become registered apprenticeship programs for DCC students to join.

Additional duties include:

  • Manages administrative and operational aspects of assigned program.
  • Establishes program standards and recommends policy changes.
  • Makes contact with community partners, management, resources and programmatic staff to discuss recommendations or provide advice on complex studies.
  • Serves as the public face of Apprenticeship in the DCC service area and works with Virginia Apprenticeship initiatives and programs.
  • Recruits businesses to become registered apprenticeships and support business through the registration process.
  • Provides monthly updates and reports about apprenticeships in the service region and opportunities for growth.
  • Works with workforce agencies, community organizations and the state apprenticeship office to identify possible apprenticeship opportunities in the service region.
  • Provide state apprenticeship information to DCC employees, students and communities utilizing presentations, attending meetings and hosting open house events.

KSA’s/Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in management, leadership, organizational planning, workforce development, or a related field of competency.
  • 3-5 years of demonstrated successful and effective program or departmental management experience.
  • Knowledge of career and job market information and academic program information needed to develop apprenticeship opportunities for students with a high level of organizational skills to develop and implement student success strategies.
  • Ability to identify, recruit, and meet with companies within the service region to develop apprenticeships.
  • Dedication to high quality customer service. Willingness to work with diverse groups and to build partnerships.
  • Relatively high level of analytical ability to find solutions to human, capital, technical and administrative problems.
  • Demonstrates familiarity with college academic requirements.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills to persuasively interact with student participants, faculty and staff, employers and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills and aptitude to utilize work processing, spreadsheets, presentation material, college software and virtual communication tools.
  • Applies knowledge of programs and analytical methods.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated, successful experience in a business, technical or healthcare field
  • Experience teaching or managing in apprenticeship, educational, or community college programs
  • Experience developing, growing, or expanding workforce programs through community partnerships
