Senior Geologist
The position assists Engineering to provide geologic assessments at Contura coal mines to assure the operations have the best available information for mining and planning decisions. Prepare recommendations for exploration and geologic programs where it has been determined that the programs will benefit the operations by improving the safety, reducing the environmental liability and increasing production while reducing costs. This position assists in the evaluation of new properties and opportunities for the company and also assists and conducts exploration and active mine evaluations.
Major Responsibilities:
· Jointly set annual goals and objectives with the Chief Engineer.
· Visit mine operations regularly and evaluate the geologic conditions and provide geologic support though underground and surface geologic mapping and interpretation of drill hole information
· Assess geologic risks and communicate with site managers, engineers and chief geologist
· Conducts or assist site geologists in hazard mapping activities at the mine sites
· Review geologic hazard maps with Engineering and develop recommendations for hazard mitigation plans
· Develop and maintenance of geologic models and data bases
· Provides geologic support for new mine development projects
· Develop and/or assist sites in the development and maintenance of an effective and efficient roof support / control plan
· Assists in the review of the annual mine budget plans and provides a risk assessment from a geologic perspective
· Develop / review of annual exploration plans
· Manage exploration activities, create geologic logs, interpret and report results
· Assist / review in geologic evaluations of properties from third party consultants
· Analyze results of studies and develop strategies to realize improvement opportunities
· Assist the engineering department as needed
· Perform other duties as directed by the Chief Engineer
Job Specific and/or Technical Skills:
· BS Geology or Geologic Engineering Degree – Required
· Five years of professional geologic experience – Required
· Coal mining experience with coal exploration experience
· Strong knowledge of geologic principles and how to apply them to coal deposition and mining
· General knowledge of coal reserves calculation methods and theory
· Proficient in common office computer programs, including AutoCAD and SurvCAD/Carlson
· Ability to work independently
· Familiar with coal mine design and coal mining methods
· Ability to develop good working relationships with mine management at all levels and disciplines as well as hourly personnel
· Strong verbal and written communication skills
