Upper School Chemistry Teacher and Advisor

The Opportunity:
Carolina Friends School is seeking a full-time Upper School teacher and advisor to join our staff for the fall of 2018. The teacher will join an Upper School team committed to continually developing a rigorous, student-centered, and mission-driven curriculum. The position centers on the teaching of chemistry, but opportunities may exist to teach science electives in other areas, as determined by the school’s needs and the teacher’s areas of expertise and interest. The successful candidate will be comfortable with, and excited about, teaching chemistry at both the high school introductory level, as well as at a level for advanced students taking a second year of chemistry in high school. Carolina Friends School offers teachers an opportunity to engage with students on a variety of levels in and out of the classroom and utilizes a narrative-based approach to student evaluation instead of letter or number grades.

The Position:
- Teach five sections (12-18 students per section) of science, including Advanced Chemistry
- Lead an advisee group of approximately 11 students
- Participate in at least one all-school committee and, for the first two years of employment, an extensive staff orientation and mentoring program
- Participate in the Upper School’s End of Year program, which in many cases requires travel
Traits and Requirements:
- At least a bachelor’s degree in a field relevant to teaching Chemistry; advanced degrees in science or education are a plus
- Experience teaching Chemistry to adolescents
- Demonstrate a familiarity and comfort with a variety of pedagogical approaches
- Genuinely enjoy working with adolescents and demonstrate an understanding of their developmental needs (intellectual, social, emotional)
- Enjoy mentoring and supporting teenagers in a wide variety of ways and contexts, demonstrating an understanding of the primacy of relationships in teaching adolescents
- Enjoy collaborating on curriculum development with colleagues within and outside of the department
- Demonstrate an understanding of and strong affinity for Quaker philosophy and the School’s mission
- Demonstrate a willingness to understand and explore how power and inequality influenced by factors such as race, class, gender, sexuality, and learning and physical disabilities impact our students and families
- Employ technology in a variety of ways in the classroom, including utilizing a Learning Management System
- Possess a commitment to continuous professional growth and an enthusiasm for learning in community
