Reporter
Are you curious? Do you see something happen and wonder why? Do you talk to lots of people and really know how to listen? Are you observant? Energetic? Do you always want to know what’s going on before anyone else does? Do you love news?
Can you communicate – clearly, accurately, in a timely manner, sometimes with humor or great storytelling, always with your audience in mind? Are you passionate about keeping people informed?
If you answered yes to any of those questions, you could be a fit for this job.
Alabama Media Group is a company with journalism in its DNA and innovation as a daily practice, and we’re looking for people who appreciate the same things. Our goal every day is to share stories that reveal new information, explain an issue, exemplify good storytelling (in video or words) or delight our audience. The successful candidate will be a self-starter who wants to regularly deliver news you can’t find anywhere else.
Specifically, we’re looking for someone to do that job in Mobile, a city with a rich 300-year history where Mardi Gras is an annual celebration and the food scene is a seafood lover’s paradise. It’s a city known for its emerging aerospace industry, shipbuilding and international shipping through the state’s largest port. Mobile is a storyteller’s haven, a place where history is coming alive in the recent discovery of the last slave ship to arrive into the United States. Located in a region that includes the fastest-growing county in Alabama and the beaches of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Mobile is also home to a vibrant music and arts community, some excellent craft breweries and coffee shops, and endless year-round outdoor opportunities thanks to our seasonal Gulf Coast climate. (Yes, you would live that close to some of the best beaches anywhere.)
We’ve launched a new daily, digital subscription product in Mobile and you’ll take the lead in its daily content. The successful candidate will embrace the use of analytics and reader feedback in planning and evaluating the work.
What’s the beat, you ask? You might focus on advanced manufacturing, logistics, transportation and international commerce. Maybe you’ll explore what it means to depend on the water – for global shipping, for recreation, for nourishment, for tourism dollars. Maybe you’ll follow the money, in government or in and out of pocketbooks. Maybe you’ll reexamine history or look at systems and see how they work. Certainly you’ll talk with interesting people and share their stories in a variety of ways.
You’ll be working in Mobile, but you’ll collaborate with a team of talented reporters and editors throughout Alabama. Our statewide newsroom has won two Pulitzers in the last three years, and we routinely make a difference in a state hungry for reporting.
If you can see yourself somewhere in this role, we’d love to explore the possibilities with you. We’re looking for someone who will take this opportunity and shape it for their success and ours. Please include with your resume a cover letter including and how you would approach the work. Additionally, please provide links to the five pieces of content that demonstrate your best work.
