Position Description

Public Health Nurse Supervisors at the Health Department of Jefferson County are responsible for overseeing and directing the work of Public Health Nurses working in one or more of the following areas: adult health, disease control, family planning, pediatrics/child care, maternity, tuberculosis, diabetes, sexually transmitted disease or emergency preparedness. Individuals in this job class perform a variety of supervisory duties including, planning and assigning work to subordinates, assisting subordinates with their work by answering questions and providing guidance, reviewing work for compliance with standards, policies, and laws, and conducting formal performance evaluations. In addition to these supervisory duties, Public Health Nurse Supervisors may also be responsible for performing many of the nursing duties of a Public Health Nurse.

To be considered for qualified for the position, a candidate must possess the following minimum qualifications:

  • Driver's license.
  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Alabama or in a state that has a reciprocity agreement with the State of Alabama.
  • Experience leading a team of professional peer and/or support staff including providing training and/or preceptorship and feedback on job-related tasks.

Job Duties

  • Supervises staff by assigning and distributing work, directing staff in their job duties, monitoring progress of work, providing feedback and/or training.
  • Trains, counsels, and/or educates patients/clients and families about treatment plans, chronic disease self-management, and future steps regarding medical care.
  • Procures and/or manages inventory (i.e., supplies and equipment) to ensure the products and services are available to meet the operational needs of each department.
  • Coordinates individual care by scheduling individuals for treatment or tests, referring patient(s) to other providers and following-up with individuals or caregivers to ensure continuity of care.
  • Performs individual interviews and assessments to determine health status or potential risks, interpret patient information and make critical decisions about needed actions and treatment care plans; includes documenting notes/information about the individual (charting).
  • Provides medical care to include administering medication and performing tests, procedures, or other treatments based on individual need or provider instructions; may include equipment demonstrations, training, and how to use supplies or equipment necessary for care.
  • Cleans and prepares individual rooms and work areas both within and outside of agency facilities; may include calibrating equipment and making sure all equipment is functioning properly.
  • Engages in activities designed to ensure professional development, awareness of developments in the field, and knowledge of relevant practices, rules, laws, policies, and/or guidelines.
