Job Description

Job Summary

This position exists to reduce fire related deaths, injuries, and property damage through the adoption and implementation of statewide fire safety codes and standards. This position provides written and verbal responses to requests for information on fire safety and the state fire code. In doing so, the position works closely with State Fire Marshal (SFM) division inspection staff, various state agencies, local fire code officials, design professionals, contractors, property owners, and the public to provide information on the provisions, application, and intent of the state fire code. This position assists in adopting the state fire code, conducts fire prevention training, and performs fire and life-safety inspections and code analysis reports where assigned. This work involves complex application and interpretation of the state fire code, state building code, referenced codes and standards, state statutes, and administrative rules. 

This position will have the option of teleworking up to 3 days; however, it will be based on the business needs of the unit and is at supervisory discretion. 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience with at least one of the following items where such activities were a primary function of the position: 1) conducting comprehensive building inspections, including the issuance of corrective orders or detailed reports of findings, to ensure compliance with a nationally recognized model fire code or building code such as IFC, NFPA 1, NFPA 101, IBC, or NFPA 5000, or 2) direct involvement with the adoption, administration, maintenance or enforcement of a nationally recognized model fire code or building code such as IFC, NFPA 1, NFPA 101, IBC, or NFPA 5000.
  • A working knowledge of building construction types, fire-related construction components and design, and the ability to apply appropriate fire code requirements to specific construction types and designs.
  • Knowledge of fire protection systems including fire sprinkler, fire alarm, hydrant, standpipes, and alternate systems; and the applicable MSFC and NFPA requirements for these systems.
  • Demonstrable history of solving complex fire- and life-safety issues through application of fire safety methods, materials, and technologies.
  • Ability to provide consultation on the fire code and develop effective working relationships with professional groups including building owners, maintenance personnel, architects and design engineers, fire and building service officials and other state, county, local and federal agencies.
  • Possession of a valid Class D Driver's License. Towing trailers up to a gross vehicle combination weight of 26,000 pounds may also be required.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and underserved communities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification as Fire Inspector I or higher with the Minnesota Fire Service Certification Board (or equivalent).
  • Ability to effectively develop and present fire code and inspection related educational content to groups of various sizes. 
  • Ability to educate property owners and managers on the benefits of achieving compliance by explaining the rationale and history behind specific fire code provisions and fire-safety practices. 
  • Ability to manage and organize work activities including fire inspections, follow-up inspections, consultations, report writing and scheduling, with minimal direct supervision.
  • Certification or eligible to be certified within 3 years of hire, as a Fire Inspector II with the Minnesota Fire Service Certification Board (MFSCB).

Physical Requirements

The appointee must have the physical ability to sit for several hours per day (e.g., at a desk and computer) and drive long distances, as some job assignments require traveling to various areas of the state. The employee must also be able to stand for several hours per day when giving presentations. Occasionally this position will require inspection of all interior and exterior areas of buildings. This includes the ability to ascend and descend ladders and stairways and traverse along uneven terrain. The appointee must be able to lift items up to 30 lbs. in weight and carry these items for short distances.
