Job Description

The Child Mind Institute is seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join our team as a part-time Reading Coach within the School & Community Programs team. The Child Mind Institute’s reading service partners with local schools to provide reading remediation to first and second grade students struggling with early reading acquisition. Reading Coaches utilize evidence-based curricula to provide direct instruction in phonological awareness, decoding, encoding, and word recognition skills. They also work closely with educators and caregivers to provide updates on student progress as well as strategies for supporting children both at home and in the classroom.

Reporting directly to the Clinical Manager of the Reading Service, this is a part-time, non-exempt position based from our NYC headquarters office. Duties will be conducted in person and requires the ability to travel to assigned school sites within New York City.

Responsibilities:

  • Deliver an evidence-based reading intervention targeting at-risk readers in first and second grade and evaluate student progress using curriculum-based measures
  • Teach 3-4 small groups during a six-week intervention cycle this summer (each group consists of 45-minute sessions held four times per week)
  • Teach 4 small groups within 14-week intervention cycles throughout the school year (each group consists of 45-minute sessions held twice per week)
  • Support with the student referral process, including conducting family outreach to discuss the program, obtaining consent for participation, and screening candidates for eligibility
  • Foster school and caregiver engagement through participation in partnership meetings, provision of on-site support prior to service delivery, and communication about student progress throughout the intervention cycle
  • Maintain documentation of student attendance, parent contact, and student progress towards intervention goals
  • Participate in one-hour weekly supervision to ensure the program is implemented with fidelity

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Prior experience working with elementary age students
  • Prior experience working in schools preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required
  • Bilingual abilities (Spanish and/or Mandarin) are a plus
  • Eagerness to learn and adapt; ability to accept and utilize constructive feedback
  • Passion for the Child Mind Institute mission
