JOB TITLE: Clinic Assistant

DEPARTMENT: Resident Clinic

REPORTS TO: Shelter Medicine Manager

SUPERVISES: N/A

CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt, Full-Time, Hourly

EFFECTIVE DATE: 7/6/2023

SUMMARY: This position provides necessary medical care for and monitoring of resident cats at Tree House Humane Society, which specializes in sick and injured stray felines. This position is also required to cross-train in the VWC prepping animals for surgery and monitoring in a high volume, high quality spay/neuter setting providing services to our community members.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Examines animals upon intake for disease, injuries, abnormalities or any health concerns and reports them to staff veterinarian
  • Accurately measures and records temperatures, pulses, respirations and weights.
  • Administers oral, topical, vaccinations, and subcutaneous medications.
  • Accurately & timely reports exams and inputs all medical findings into the animal’s electronic medical record
  • Clipping and scrubbing of animals prior to surgery and assisting in surgery
  • Monitoring recovery of surgical patients, sterilizing surgical packs and maintaining surgical/prep/clinic areas.
  • Performs appropriate patient restraint on both cats and dogs, using low stress techniques.
  • Monitors general health of felines in a variety of ages and illness or injury.
  • Follows all standard operating procedures
  • Operates a computer, medical equipment, laboratory equipment diagnostic instruments and assists in maintaining equipment.
  • Stocks supplies and cleans the clinic work area.
  • Assists in Veterinary Wellness Center or vaccine pop-ups as requested or scheduled by Veterinary Programs Manager and VWC Manager
  • Performs all other duties as requested by management

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Preferred 1 year minimum experience in veterinary medical, shelter, or spay/neuter clinic.
  • Passion for animals and animal welfare
  • Strong background in customer service
  • Flexibility with work hours and able to work additional hours when necessary
  • Must be able to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, as well as a strong sense of personal accountability
  • Excellent verbal communication skills

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Frequently required to stand, walk and bend over or stoop.
  • Occasional exposure to wet and/or humid conditions (non-weather).
  • Must occasionally lift and /or move up to 40 pounds.
  • May be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises and animal bodily fluids or feces.
  • May be exposed to aggressive, ill and/or injured animals, as well as bites, scratches, and infectious (zoonotic) animal diseases.
