Salary: $120-140k base depending on experience

Executive Director


The Executive Director is the Chief Executive Officer for the Center for Health and Learning (CHL), a remote 501(c)3 nonprofit registered in Vermont. The ED reports to the Board of Directors and is the chief representative of CHL. The ED is responsible for the organization’s leadership and consistent achievement of its mission and financial objectives and works closely and collaboratively with both internal and external stakeholders.  


The ED provides leadership for the organization, along with strong orientation towards advancing and scaling best practices that improve outcomes in mental, emotional, and social health and resilience in individuals, families, and communities. The organization has established a strong basis of reputability in the field. 


The ED will demonstrate a strong background in strategic partnership development, major gifts, fundraising, Foundations engagement, and an interest in bringing the Umatter suicide prevention curriculum to the New England region to advance the work and mission of the organization.


The ED will provide the strategic direction to diversifying and scaling our funding base.


The ED works in close partnership with the Senior Operations Director and Program Manager who are responsible for planning, implementing, and supervising programs and activities. 


Organization Mission, Strategy, Business Development (60%):  

  • Works with the Board and staff to ensure that the mission is fulfilled through strategic planning, program development, fundraising and community outreach.
  • Works with staff to develop big ideas that serve as funding magnets.
  • Responsible for strengthening CHL’s image and visibility by being active and visible in the community; by working closely with other professional, civic and private organizations; and by representing CHL at national meetings and conferences, as needed.
  • Explores strategic partnerships to strengthen fundraising efforts.
  • Oversees the expansion of the organization’s visibility in educational, medical, and business communities across Vermont and New England.
  • Develops strategic and collaborative partnerships with leaders of local, state, and national agencies, organizations and legislative bodies around issues and opportunities of common interest.
  • Ensures effective statewide and regional communications, marketing and outreach, and represents the organization at public events.
  • Responsible for fundraising and developing other revenues, such as fee-for-service, major gifts, Foundation relationships, etc.


Financial Performance and Sustainability (20%):

  • Connects mission, business model, and capital structure to assure long-term financial security and achieve organizational outcomes, including overseeing all matters related to finance and budgets.
  • Works with the Operations Director to develop budgets and monitor resources to ensure the financial health of the organization. 
  • In partnership with the Operations Director, submits a draft annual budget to the Board for approval.
  • Engages in sound fiscal management, including operating within the approved budget, ensuring maximum resource utilization and providing the Board with monthly financial statements. 
  • Oversees the grant process to ensure grants are aligned with the mission and values of the organization.   
  • Submits an annual development plan that includes target goals, promising fundraising opportunities (government, foundation, and corporate), and a plan of action with the projected timeline.
  • Oversees implementation of the development plan, working closely with other staff.

 

Organization Leadership (10%):

  • Works closely with the Operations Director to allocate organizational resources to ensure that the organization’s operations are appropriate. 
  • Works with the Operations Director oversees staffing and use of organizational resources to ensure that the operations of the organization are appropriate.
  • Hire, train, lead, and evaluate senior management staff.
  • Ensure fair, respectful and equitable employment policies and practices.
  • Lead, develop, and inspire a Leadership team and staff that works in an integrated yet entrepreneurial way to achieve major goals, using coaching, mentoring, and delegation.
  • Creates and maintains a healthy, respectful, and collaborative work environment.
  • Has ultimate responsibility for effective administration of CHL’s operations.


Board Governance (10%):

  • Works closely with the Board to fulfill the organization’s mission.
  • Responsible for leading the operations of CHL in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission as adopted by the Board of Directors.
  • Responsible for communicating effectively with the Board and providing, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function properly and make informed decisions.


Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of experience in a nonprofit senior management position.
  • Strong preference for candidates based in the New England area.
  • Strong commitment to the mission of CHL.
  • Commitment to and working knowledge of mental health promotion strategies, including suicide prevention approaches.
  • Strong track record of building partnerships within the mental health field. 
  • Active fundraising experience. Excellent donor relations skills and understanding of the funding community.
  • A history of successfully generating new revenue streams and improving financial health.
  • Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage and develop consensus with a wide range of stakeholders and cultures.
  • Ability to cultivate strategic partnerships to further the quality, breadth, and reach of CHL offerings.
  • Ability to think creatively and strategically to develop successful organizational strategies and goals.
  • Ability to establish and implement plans, policies, and procedures that lead to attaining organizational goals and objectives.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and knowledge of project management principles.
  • Financial understanding. 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with Hubspot or other CRM preferred


Compensation and Benefits

The base salary range for this position, depending on experience, is $120-140k
