A Greater New Haven Transit District mechanic is responsible for the vehicle maintenance and repair of GNHTD’s fleet of gas and electric-powered vehicles, including but not limited to, body-on-chassis vehicles, light duty vans, and all GNHTD support vehicles; vehicle-related components, including wheelchair lifts and ramps; vehicle support equipment; facilities and their related equipment, including forklift and shop equipment; and other duties as assigned by the Fleet Maintenance Manager.

Accountability:

This position reports directly to the Fleet Maintenance Manager and works collaboratively with all staff assigned to the district.

Position Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Five-years’ experience in a related vehicle repair field
  • Connecticut Public Passenger Endorsement.
  • Must have appropriate mechanic’s tool set
  • Knowledge of standard practices, usual to vehicle repairs.
  • Basic theory and operation of engines, transmissions, brakes, suspensions, electricity, pneumatics and hydraulics.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Ability to give and receive written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to make decisions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Possess oral and written communication skills that can be clearly articulated and understood are essential
  • Advanced computer skills
  • Other duties as assigned by Fleet Maintenance Manager.

Requirements:

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Possess effective interpersonal skills.
  • Be able to communicate professionally with people at all levels of the organization and external contacts.
  • Diagnose and perform accurately all phases of vehicle and equipment repair including the repair of brakes, engine tune-ups, suspensions, drive trains, transmission clutches and other repairs.
  • Ensure work orders are completed properly and accurately. Maintain records of all maintenance work completed including parts and supplies used.
  • Complete preventative maintenance (PMs), safety inspections, and annual maintenance inspections.

Responsible for contributing to a safe and secure work environment. Is cognizant of surroundings and acts in a safe manner at all times. Is knowledgeable of and adheres to OSHA, GNHTD and other safety standards, directives and advisories, both written and verbal. Uses safety equipment and protective clothing as appropriate and necessary. Maintains good housekeeping habits in work area to avoid injury to self or others. Immediately reports to supervisor or risk manager any safety or security issue and makes recommendations for improvement. Observes building access restrictions and locks doors when not present. Knows the nearest two safety exits and participates in safety drills.

Employee must obey safety rules established by the company and exercise caution in all work activities and work areas. While performing the functions of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, speak and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. May be required to conduct work in or out of doors in all weather conditions. The work is performed primarily in a garage setting. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud.

It is one of eleven regional transit districts in the State of Connecticut that serves 21 New Haven area municipalities and has 10 member towns. The district serves individuals with a permanent or temporary disability as well as anyone from a member town who is over the age of 65 or has a disability. GNHTD provides transportation services for the elderly and disabled in the South Central Region of Connecticut.
