Food Services Worker

Columbus House opened its doors in 1982 to provide services for men and women at least 18 years of age. Our goals quickly broadened from the mere provision of food and shelter and simple survival, to understanding and working toward overcoming the problems which cause people to become homeless.

Columbus House, along with its core of loyal supporters, friends, and volunteers, has remained committed to fulfilling its mission: "To serve people experiencing homelessness or at imminent risk by providing life-saving outreach, shelter and housing and by fostering their personal growth and independence. We advocate for and create affordable housing to end homelessness in our communities."

Purpose
Under the direction of the Food Services Manager, the Food Services Worker assists with the cleaning of kitchen facilities and the meal preparation and kitchen oversight in a homeless shelter setting.  Services Workers are mindful of the clients served by Columbus House and seek to maintain a physical environment that reflects the core values of Trauma Informed Service: Safety, Trustworthiness, Choice, Collaboration, and empowerment. 

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Organizes and directs food service functions and supervises food service volunteers during absence of the Food Service Manager. 
• Ensures the proper storage of food and other supplies.    
• Assists in cleaning and maintaining all food preparation related equipment and facilities.    
• Assists in food preparation, including meals from scratch.
• Dining Room serving as needed and stocking of food pantry.
• Ability to lift up to 40 pounds, sit, stand, lift, stoop, clean, reach and grasp for requisite periods of time.
• Ability to move independently throughout Columbus House facilities.
• Able to use the equipment/tools common to a commercial grade kitchen environment.
• Able to maintain attention and detailed focus in completing tasks and being observant of potentially unsafe conditions.
• Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Requirements:

• High School Graduate or equivalent
• Two years’ experience in food preparation and service
• Serve Safe Certificate, or the ability to obtain it during the first month of employment
• Must have initiative, integrity, and responsibility with the ability to make decisions
• Able to follow directions and accept supervision
• Possessed of appropriate grooming, manner and conduct for a food service environment
• Able to supervise the work of others
• Able to continue to be trained on the job in food preparation, cooking, estimating quantities and other food service duties
• Understands the problems of homelessness and is interested in creating an atmosphere of "caring" among the staff
• Excellent organizational and time management skills with a deadline-oriented mindset
• Basic computer skills for time keeping and email purposes
• Culturally competent; must possess the capacity to work within a team and foster teamwork
• Strong empathic skills coupled with a high degree of reliability and punctuality

Supervised by: Food Service Manager

Schedule/Shifts: Tuesday, Saturday, and Sunday 10am- 6pm
Monday 2pm-6pm and Wednesday-Friday 2pm - 6pm 

Must be able to work and weekends and holidays.
Pay: $17.00
