Job Description

Our client is seeking a talented Electrical Controls Engineer with expertise in designing and implementing electrical control systems specifically tailored for drilling equipment in the oil and gas industry. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in developing innovative control solutions to enhance the performance, safety, and reliability of thier drilling machinery and applications. This position offers the opportunity to work on cutting-edge projects and contribute to the advancement of drilling technology.

Responsibilities:

  1. Design and develop electrical control systems for drilling equipment, including rig control systems, power distribution systems, and safety interlock systems.
  2. Collaborate closely with mechanical engineers, system integrators, and customers to understand project requirements and develop customized control solutions.
  3. Create detailed electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts using CAD software, ensuring compliance with industry standards and specifications.
  4. Program and configure PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems, and HMI (Human-Machine Interface) devices to monitor and control drilling operations.
  5. Implement advanced control algorithms for precise positioning, motion control, and automation of drilling processes, optimizing efficiency and accuracy.
  6. Conduct thorough testing and validation of electrical control systems, both in simulated environments and on-site at drilling sites, to ensure proper functionality and reliability under various operating conditions.
  7. Provide technical support during installation, commissioning, and maintenance of electrical systems, troubleshooting issues and implementing corrective actions as needed.
  8. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate electrical control systems with mechanical components, instrumentation, and communication networks, ensuring seamless operation and data exchange.
  9. Stay informed about emerging technologies, industry trends, and regulatory requirements related to drilling equipment and electrical controls, proposing innovative solutions to enhance product performance and competitiveness.
  10. Document design specifications, test procedures, and technical reports comprehensively, maintaining accurate records throughout the project lifecycle.

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
  2. 5+ years of experience in designing and implementing electrical control systems for drilling equipment or similar heavy machinery applications in the oil and gas industry.
  3. Proficiency in PLC programming languages such as ladder logic and structured text, with experience working with industry-leading PLC brands (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens).
  4. Strong knowledge of electrical components, power distribution systems, and control panel design for harsh industrial environments.
  5. Familiarity with relevant industry standards and regulations (e.g., API, NEC, IECEx) governing electrical equipment used in hazardous locations.
  6. Experience with SCADA software for real-time monitoring and control of industrial processes, as well as data acquisition and analysis.
  7. Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot complex electrical systems, both independently and as part of a team.
  8. Effective communication skills and ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, customers, and vendors to achieve project objectives.
  9. Detail-oriented mindset with a commitment to quality, safety, and continuous improvement.
  10. Willingness to travel to customer sites, including offshore drilling rigs, for installation, commissioning, and field support activities as required.

Preferred Skills:

  1. Familiarity with drilling rig components and subsystems, such as top drives, mud pumps, drawworks, and pipe handling systems.
  2. Experience with high-level programming languages (e.g., C/C++, Python) for customizing control algorithms and integrating third-party software solutions.
  3. Knowledge of communication protocols commonly used in industrial automation, such as Modbus, Ethernet/IP, and Profibus.
  4. Understanding of cybersecurity principles and best practices for protecting control systems from cyber threats.
  5. Certification in functional safety (e.g., CFSE, TÜV Rheinland) or relevant professional associations (e.g., SPE, IEEE) related to drilling technology and electrical engineering.

Working Conditions: This position primarily operates in an office environment, with occasional visits to manufacturing facilities and drilling sites. The role may involve exposure to outdoor weather conditions, noise, and mechanical hazards associated with drilling operations. Travel to domestic and international locations may be required, including offshore and remote locations, with potential for extended stays away from home. Personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety training will be provided as needed to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
