Job Description

Position Summary:

As an Ophthalmic Technician, you will conduct eye exams in order to obtain an extensive amount of data, as delegated by the physician, to allow for proper professional diagnosis of patients’ conditions. Technicians are responsible for collecting and documenting patient medical history for the ophthalmologist’s reference.

Job Type: Full-time, On Site with the ability to travel to multiple locations as needed.

Reports to: Clinic Coordinator & Team Lead

Responsibilities:

• Provide quality patient care with consideration for each patient's needs.

• Triage of patients throughout clinical hours to include:

o Communication with team to maintain a smooth flow of patients, altering the test sequence as required.

o Perform duties consistent with ophthalmic writer/scribe.

o Prepare equipment, examination rooms, and clean instruments between every patient.

o Strictly maintain all sanitation protocols.

o Assists physician with laser procedures, minor surgeries, maintaining practice standards of sterile technique and infection control.

• Perform accurate and consistent documentation and measurement tasks to include:

o Visual acuity

o Manual lensometry

o Confrontational visual fields

o Stereo testing

o Evaluation of motility

o Pupillary function tests

o Color plates

o Applanation tonometry

o Refractometry

o Angle assessment

o Dilation of pupils

o Contact lens evaluations

o Visual field testing

o Optic nerve scanning (i.e. OCT, HRT, GDx)

o Pachymetry

o Corneal topography

o Other tasks specific to the physician’s needs because of new technologies.

• Provides back-up to the ophthalmic photographer regarding fundus, exterior and anterior segment photographs.

• Instrument Maintenance

o Troubleshoots instruments as necessary.

o Replaces bulbs.

o Checks connections.

o Performs archiving functions according to manufacturer recommendations.

o Performs autoclaving and maintenance of instrument sterility.

o Reports continued difficulty to Lead Ophthalmic Technician.

• Administrative

o Seeks advice from senior staff as necessary, never performing beyond capabilities.

o Provide telephone support regarding ocular emergencies, prescription refills, and patient care questions.

o Maintains back up levels of stock in exam and procedure rooms.

o Performs other essential job functions as required.

Qualifications & Skills:

• High school diploma or GED required, some college or postsecondary optical training preferred.

• Two to five years' experience as a certified ophthalmic assistant.

• Demonstrated, advanced comprehension of the ophthalmic assistant skills as outlined by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).

• Basic understanding of optics and the ability to perform refractometry.

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

• Empathetic personality with concern for patients’ needs.

• Strong organization with attention to detail.

• Ability to work as a productive and contributing team member.

• Demonstrated comprehension of the principles of optics, refraction, and contact lenses.

• Demonstrated ability to perform comprehensive work ups on three patients per hour.

• Demonstrated computer literacy.

• Must be capable of working at different locations some days as needed by the practice.

• Valid proof of certification as an ophthalmic assistant.

• Valid CPR certification.

Preferred Experience:

• Knowledge of safety, infection control, documentation, and quality improvement protocols.

• Knowledge of new products and the ability to explain or demonstrate the benefits.

• Experience with electronic scheduling system and electronic medical records (EMR).

Work Environment & Physical Demands:

• Work is performed in a medical office setting.

• Physical demands of position: Combination of standing, sitting, walking, stooping, bending, and reaching. Occasionally must lift/carry up to 50 pounds.
