Position Title: Facilities Assistant, Hastings House

Supervisor: Assistant VP of Facilities and Food Services

Salary: $22.00 - $25.00/ Hour (Overtime Eligible)

Starting salaries typically fall in the lower half of the salary range; however, they are ultimately determined by the scope of the position, the candidate's relevant experience, and internal equity.

Hours: Full-Time (36 Hours - 4 day work week)

ABOUT THE ROLE: EMPath seeks a motivated individual to join our Facilities Unit to support the housing activities that include 4 shelter sites for persons experiencing homelessness. The position supports the Facilities Coordinator in maintaining our congregate facility in the Brighton neighborhood of Boston, MA. The Facilities Assistant is responsible for light maintenance repairs, grounds keeping, unit turnovers, moving furniture as needed, some painting and floor maintenance. Work in residential rooms are time sensitive. The ideal candidate will have a desire to improve their skills and enjoy working in a busy environment.

This position is considered an essential position which requires reporting to work during snow and other conditions that may close business functions of EMPath.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Daily maintenance of property, including interior and exterior grounds; Maintenance includes trash pickup and removal; spot cleaning of doors, windows, walls and sanitation of high-traffic or communal areas.
  2. Assist Facilities Coordinator in simple repair items to troubleshoot common orders including light bulb replacement, minor plumbing or pipe clearing, smoke detector batteries, installation of blinds and screens, installation of towel bars etc., as needed.
  3. Perform landscaping and related activities such as snow or debris removal from sidewalks and stairs using hand operated tools and small power equipment.
  4. Experience with or ability to carry out safety procedures, storage of chemicals, supplies and equipment, tools as directed.
  5. Ability to perform simple building/grounds maintenance and repair duties utilizing commonly used tools, including but not limited to power tools and hand tools such as hammers, pliers and screwdrivers, power drills, lawnmowers, blowers, and snow blowers.
  6. Maintain the use and upkeep of assigned power equipment including floor buffers and hand tools.
  7. Support unit turnover including cleaning and sanitizing vacated rooms, check and replace furnishings as needed; strip, wax and buff floors or conduct carpet cleaning, as needed.
  8. Touch up/wall painting as needed; Ability to use and climb ladders is required.
  9. Manage work orders from congregant or scattered shelter sites with strong communication and organizational skills.
  10. Assist program staff in restocking supplies, as applicable and support with building operations including room set-up for community meetings.
  11. Maintain orderly supply and storage areas; all equipment and supplies to be returned to required place at end of shift.
  12. Ability to safely operate all agency vehicles, travel to varied sites and promptly respond to orders as needed
  13. Be a part of the On-Call facilities rotation on nights and weekends.
  14. Other duties as assigned

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

  • Minimum of 1-year experience as a Maintenance Technician, Porter, Facilities/ Janitorial Worker, or Groundkeeper.
  • Proficient in English; Bilingual in Spanish and/or Haitian Creole is preferred but not required.
  • Some experience in basic uniform sanitary codes and keenly observant of safety habitability issues, and dangers to small children.
  • Skilled in effective communication in all modes, including electronic, written, and verbal.
  • Able to perform in a fast paced and changing environment.
  • Able to travel to EMPath shelter sites within 35 minutes or less; or live within 20 miles of the City of Boston.
  • Valid Massachusetts Driver’s License (Ability to pass a driving check if/as company vehicle will be used).

Working Conditions: Requires traveling, remaining on feet, climbing flights of stairs, climbing ladders up to 15 feet. Lifting up to 50lbs, sitting, bending, stooping and stretching. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator and other office equipment. Work is done in the community at home visits. May require attendance at off-site meetings related to service provision and housing search. May require some evening hours. Work can be fast paced.
