Position Summary:

This position shall be responsible for ensuring regulatory compliance, best management practices, effective processes & systems, and continual improvement in environmental performance of all of IP Corporation’s businesses and locations. Working in close cooperation with corporate and location personnel, this role will lead, implement, improve, sustain and participate in the environmental aspects and elements of IP Corporation’s environment, health & safety (EHS) management system.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in chemical engineering.
  • Masters Degree in chemical engineering or environmental science.
  • Professional license or certification such as PE, CHMM or equivalent.
  • Environmental compliance & management experience in a leadership position.
  • Batch chemical processing manufacturing experience.
  • Experience developing and leading pollution prevention and waste minimization programs.
  • Title V Air Permitting experience.
  • Knowledge & experience with other EHS programs such as DOT HazMat, NFPA/ICS incident management, behavior-based safety, PSM and other OSHA regulations.

Education/Training Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering, biology, chemistry, environmental science or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 8 years of environmental compliance management work experience.
  • Training and experience in developing and managing EHS Management Systems conformant with ISO 14001 and/or RC-14001.

Key Areas of Responsibility:

This position will ensure compliance to all applicable regulations and management system requirements covering environmentally-relevant corporate-wide activities related to, among other topics: air emissions, air permitting, wastewater, stormwater, oil/chemical spill prevention, solid waste, hazardous waste, Tier 2, TRI, Pollution Prevention, energy, GHG, ASTs, USTs, PFAS, TSCA, remediation, spill response and management systems. Key responsibilities include:

  • Maintain a current working knowledge of and ensure compliance to all applicable local, state, and federal environmental laws and regulations.
  • Act as a regulatory arm for environmental compliance.
  • Develop, establish and maintain Corporate environmental policies and procedures to comply with legal requirements, conform with management system requirements, minimize environmental impact, conserve natural resources and continually improve our environmental performance.
  • Provide leadership, strategy and initiatives necessary to appropriately manage environmental risk for IP Corporation.
  • Develop systems and processes for continual improvement in environmental and risk assessment with the goal of top tier industry environmental performance.
  • Lead, assess, direct and train the organization as necessary on new environmental initiatives.
  • Provide direction, analysis and guidance on environmental aspects of major capital projects and process changes.
  • Prepare all sites to achieve “audit ready” status for EPA and local environmental inspections.
  • Develop, implement and participate in an internal environmental audit program.
  • Lead environmental assessments needed for corporate and manufacturing process risk management and management of change efforts.
  • Take a hands-on approach to identify and correct issues to improve compliance and improve environmental practices throughout the organization.
  • Report environmental incidents to senior management. Oversee environmental incident investigations and resulting CAPAs.
  • Provide regular reports on environmental performance to senior leadership.

Manager’s General Responsibilities:

  • Closely collaborate with senior management to ensure alignment in all key areas of responsibility.
  • Establish effective relationships with senior leaders, business managers and functional leaders across all operating segments of IP Corporation, and with regulatory agencies with environmental interests in IP Corporation’s facilities.
  • Mentor and coach Plant EHS Managers.
  • Manage assigned projects.
  • Perform testing, calculations and analysis as required.
  • Travel as required to support the company goals and objectives.


Competencies Required:

  • Broad and deep experience and knowledge in managing environmental compliance within a specialty chemicals business.
  • Sound judgement and application of risk management principles in determining Corporate priorities and initiatives.
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of regulatory compliance impacting the business.
  • Practical plant operations knowledge obtained as a hands-on participant.
  • Capability to build/maintain excellent relationships across the organization.
  • Excellent communications skills: ability to listen, summarize and concisely and effectively articulate a position; and, ability to convince and influence.
