Job Description

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) will ensure that the LAYC has excellent infrastructure and systems – human capital management; technology; facilities management; and budgeting and financial management – to support growth and excellent outcomes for youth and their families.

Reporting to the President/CEO, the LAYC’s CFO will play a significant role by overseeing and enhancing the administrative, operational, and program support functions necessary to deepen and expand LAYC’s impact. A key member of the senior leadership team, s/he will be a strategic thought partner to the CEO, the Board of Directors, and members of the leadership team.

Specifically, the CFO will lead the financial and administrative functions, including the Finance, Information Technology (IT) and Facilities operations.

LAYC/MMYC’s mission is to empower a diverse population of youth to achieve a successful transition to adulthood, through multicultural, comprehensive, and innovative programs that address youths' social, academic, and career needs. To achieve that mission, LAYC/MMYC provides services and opportunities to approximately 4,000 youth annually to support academic achievement, promote healthy behaviors, and guide youth toward successful adulthood. LAYC/MMYC also conducts advocacy and public policy work to broaden opportunities for youth.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategy, Vision, and Leadership

  • Contribute to the achievement of LAYC’s strategic goals and objectives as well as the overall management of the organization.
  • Advise the President/CEO and other key members of the senior management on all financial and administrative matters. Including the financial planning, budgeting, cash flow, IT, and all facilities issues.
  • Serve as the financial liaison to the board, investment committee, and audit committee; effectively communicate and present critical financial matters at select board of directors and committee meetings.
  • Work with CFO and organizational leaders to provide insight into organizational performance. Provide actionable information to the organization
  • Represent LAYC externally, as necessary, particularly in banking and lease negotiations.

Operations

  • Lead, and drive results for the finance, IT, and facilities functions.
  • Upgrade and implement an appropriate system of finance, IT, and facilities policies, internal controls, standards, and procedures.
  • Build and maintain an effective relationship with the organization’s audit and tax firm.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute the annual budget process, and be responsible for the annual audit and Form 990.
  • Work with Managing Directors across the organization to discuss budgets.
  • Design and implement operational and systems improvements to drive efficiency
  • Manage reporting to external organizations, key funders and foundations.

Team Developpement/ Leadership

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership to the leaders of the finance, IT and facilities teams.
  • Ensure staff members receive timely and appropriate training and development.
  • Establish and monitor staff performance and development goals, assign accountabilities, set objectives, establish priorities, conduct annual performance appraisals, and administer salary adjustments for direct reposts on the finance and administrative teams.
  • Mentor and develop staff in the finance and administrative offices using a supportive and collaborative approach.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Business, Finance, or accounting degree mandatory, MBA and/or CPA strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years' experience in a senior management role overseeing business operations and driving significant results in a high-performance nonprofit or social enterprise.
  • Familiar with nonprofit finance and accounting regulations.
  • Intacct experience preferred

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong mentoring and coaching experience with a team with diverse levels of expertise.
  • Ability to explain complex financial information to non-financial staff.
  • Superior management skills; ability to influence and engage direct and indirect reports and peers.
  • Self–reliant and result oriented manager.
  • Excellent judgement and creative problem-solving skills including negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills and the ability to effectively interface with senior management, LAYC’s Board of Directors, and staff.
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of community and local resources.
  • Flexible schedule, including occasional evenings for school events.
  • Complete criminal and child abuse/neglect clearances.
  • Flexible, energetic, positive individual with commitment to youth development in a high quality, respectful environment.
  • Ability to work well and communicate with culturally diverse populations.

Work Environment

  • The workplace is fast paced.
  • Travel will be required including to the various LAYC sites in the DMV area.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This is largely a sedentary position that requires the ability to speak, hear, see, and lift small objects up to 10 lbs. May require the ability to travel locally and/or regionally.
