Job Purpose

The Office of Catholic Education for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia seeks a Missionary Disciple who will promote the mission to love and follow Jesus Christ with an unwavering commitment to preserve authentic Catholic Teaching, provide a model for Missionary Discipleship and develop a robust strategic plan for the fifteen (15) Secondary Schools and three (3) Schools of Special Education centered on a lived witness of faith in and for God. The Director of Spirituality and Mission will report to the Superintendent for Secondary Schools and the Schools of Special Education, and work with the Vicar of Faith Formation with Youth and Young Adults, Office of Catholic Education, Administrators, Faculty, and School Ministers/Directors of School Ministry/Chaplains to cultivate a culture of Missionary Discipleship throughout our school communities.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work in close collaboration with the Superintendent and the Vicar of Faith Formation with Youth and Young Adults to provide coordination and leadership of programs and events in support of the enhancement of the Theology curriculum in Catholic Schools.
  • Lead and collaborate with the Secondary Team, Secondary Schools and Schools of Special Education and School Ministers in spiritual development for students, families, teachers, staff, and administrators.
  • Provide vision, leadership, and excellence in ministerial offerings and strategic planning that strengthens the Office of Catholic Education and school leadership teams in a holistic approach to a robust Catholic culture throughout the System.
  • Identify and address the spiritual needs of our schools, offering innovative solutions and programs.
  • The Director works jointly with the Vicar of Faith Formation with Youth and Young Adults in implementing programs, standards for mission formation, retreat, and service encounters, and establishes outcome measurements for continuous growth.
  • Cultivate a culture of mentorship with Campus Ministers and participate in annual evaluations of Campus Minsters.
  • Ensure that the lay ministers are aware and compliant with all liturgical norms regarding our school celebration of the Mass and other liturgies.
  • Participates in Team Meetings and other meetings related to the role of Mission and Vision.
  • Orient new Administrators to Mission and Vision, the Culture of the Archdiocese and historical legacy.
  • Deliver presentations at Orientation, Professional Development, Staff Development and Leadership programs, as well as other opportunities as they arise for faculty, staff, School Ministers, and Administrators.

Administrative Duties

  • Other duties that may be assigned at the discretion of the Archbishop. The Superintendent will rank priorities when the need arises.
  • Coordinate all the gatherings of school ministers, chaplains, and Directors of School Ministry.
  • Oversee and manage department budget.
  • Attend administration and staff meetings.
  • Meet with the Superintendent and the Vicar of Faith Formation with Youth and Young Adults on a Monthly basis.
  • Participating in meetings/workshops sponsored by the Office for Faith Formation with Youth and Young Adults.

Qualifications

  • Must be a Missionary Disciple capable of forming others into Missionary Disciples.
  • Must be a practicing Catholic, willing to uphold Catholic moral teaching and leading a life consistent with the Catholic Faith. A letter from one's pastor stating that the candidate is in good standing in the Church is required.
  • Must possess a Master's degree in Theology or Religious Studies from a Catholic college or university.
  • Minimum of five years of leadership experience, preferably at the Diocesan level.
  • Ability to think and plan strategically.
  • Solid grounding in the Catholic Theological Tradition.
  • Previous experience in secondary education or youth ministry required.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions.
  • Work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to think creatively to build programs and opportunities related to our Mission.
  • Safe Environment training, documents, and appropriate clearances, indicating one is eligible to be hired for work in the Church and with minors must be provided.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, email and social media preferred.

Working Conditions

  • Twelve-month, full-time position; evenings and weekends as required.
  • A valid driver's license and willingness to travel.
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • The majority of this job will be spent indoors in a climate-controlled environment.

Physical Requirements

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; talk or hear.
  • Must be able to carry and lift items weighing up to 15 pounds.
