Job Description
Summary: As an affordable housing developer and property management organization, our staff accountant performs a range of duties essential to achieving our mission of providing access to stable, affordable housing for people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. The Senior Accountant is responsible for multiple aspects of property level and organizational level financial reporting for the organization. The position works closely with all teams across the organization, (e.g., Property Management, fundraising, operations, and real estate development and often residents), and takes direction from the Senior Accountant and Chief Financial Officer. A successful Senior Accountant ensures the timeliness and accuracy of financial reporting for internal and external purposes. The Senior Accountant directly reports to the Chief Financial Officer.

Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Collaborate with Property Management to record and report business activities (e.g., rent payments, security deposits, operations expenses, petty cash, vendor invoices, and other property related activities).
  • Records budgets and routine monthly charges to properties including for management fees, work orders, and insurance.
  • Complete requisitions for assigned properties and maintenance supplies.
  • Reconciles all property management software transactions interfaced to accounting software.*
  • Prepare and complete payroll responsibilities.*
  • Oversees preparation of monthly grant requisitions and prepares all monthly journal entries.*​​​​
  • Prepares quarterly and annual sales tax returns, property tax listings, exemption requests, escheated funds, and 1099 reporting.*
  • Monitors cash flows (e.g., banking) and completes ACH duties.
  • Monitors activities and performance of Housing and Urban Development entities, prepares requests to Housing and Urban Development for reserves, and generates budget and communication to Housing and Urban Development for annual contract renewal.*
  • Oversee accurate recording and timely payment of accounts payable portal, mortgage payments, expedites approvals, and coding for vendor invoices.
  • Assists financial officer with preparation of annual budget and external audits.*
  • Supports financial officer with development budgets, construction draws, and cost certifications as needed.*
  • Supports or assists with accounting setup and continued support related to new builds, rehabilitation projects, and asset dispositions.
  • Engages effectively with accounting team or other departments exercising professionalism during business hours and company sponsored events.
  • Monitors insurance certificates for workers compensation and general liability insurance for subcontractors.
  • Process month-end transactions.
  • Performs assigned special projects and research.
  • Supporting Accountants and leasing team with key subsidy requests.
  • Attends CASA fundraising events and supports fundraising staff as requested.
  • Supports volunteer coordinator with community events.
Senior Accountant takes ownership of key performance indicators and mentors internal staff (e.g., property management, leasing, fund development, etc.).
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Possesses advanced business, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
  • Adopts lean thinking, principles, and practices and initiates related professional development.
  • Effective vertical and horizontal communication skills, written and verbal.
  • CPA or CFP preferred but not required.
  • Supports and enforces internal controls established by the organization and the department and required to disclose internal controls weaknesses.
  • Mitigates and detects fraudulent activity by establishing professional skepticism when analyzing financial information.
  • Energetic self-starter & critical thinker; demonstrates initiative & wiliness to go extra mile in any situation.
  • Exhibits attention to detail, budget awareness, and a commitment to a high degree of accuracy.
  • Practiced communication and interpersonal skills with ability to lead and inspire others.

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with ability to balance quickness & quality.
  • Proficient technology skills to include Microsoft 365 suite products and related third party vendors.

Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting (B.A./B.S.) from a four-year college or university
6 to 10 years related nonprofit or real estate or property management experience in finance or accounting roles.

Qualifications:
  • Mid-to-Expert level knowledge and experience using spreadsheets MS-Excel and Microsoft applications.
  • Knowledge of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and financial reporting related to NFP
  • Superior organizational and time management skills are required
  • Language skills proficiency with demonstrated ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations
  • Experience using accounting software QuickBooks or Avid and proficient using other software applications
  • Skilled property management accountant or nonprofit accountant.
  • Experience in completing annual audits and Form 990.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Performs well under pressure while meeting deadlines.
