Job Description
The CSPD Instrument Specialist adheres to the protocols in Decontamination, Processing, and Sterilization. Understanding Sterile Processing infection control process and policies as they pertain to instrument and equipment maintenance, the CSPD Instrument Specialist's responsibilities include thorough cleaning of instruments and equipment to ensure the absence of any bio-burden, as well as inspecting, function testing, and assembling items for High Level Disinfection or Sterilization. Maintaining accurate documentation through instrument tracking systems is a key aspect of the role.

The primary mission is to build a cohesive team, improve existing processes and customer satisfaction. Technicians will identify improvement opportunities in organizational structure, business procedures and staff education that can provide operational, financial, and quality improvements to Sterile Processing. This position will work with the Administration and the Sterile Processing Management team(s) to implement improvement opportunities. The Instrument Specialist (s) will be working directly with the Client and will report to and support the designated facility Director(s) while working cohesively with the SPD staff.


Technician will undertake the collection, review and analysis of data that includes, but not limited to:

Management Guidance / Mentoring & Process Improvement
  • Implement tools to effectively perform day-to-day operations.
  • Manage Coach and Mentor direct client Staff
  • Evaluate current processes and implement Process Improvement Initiative
Instrumentation
  • Identify standardization and utilization opportunities.
Efficiencies in Sterile Processing
  • Instrument storage and handling
  • On time tray delivery
  • Condition and accuracy of instrument sets and instrument set lists
  • Compliance with sterilization, infection control, quality, and regulatory requirements
  • Space utilization
  • Processing volume/activity validation
  • Inventory management
  • Productivity indicators
  • Quality Assurance Programs
  • Review Policies and Procedures

Additional duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Physically relocate instruments and place into final locations.
  • Provide count of inventory item, quantity, and location via Excel Spreadsheet
  • Identification of inventory (item and qty) needed to achieve established par levels
  • Review existing data-Back stock inventories-Martials Management
  • Identification and catalogue of items at customer location by item code, vendor and qty
  • Will provide platform in excel or cloud-based program for capture
  • Separation of items without item codes
  • Organization of items on pegboards, bins or drawers as directed by the AES lead
  • Application of ID labels for locations in a very prescribed manner (straight, same pre-identified location, uniform orientation)
  • Provide final counts by item code or product type as directed by lead
  • Implementation of large-scale set changes/standardization
  • Assist with the unpacking and organization of new instruments
  • Facilitate the washing of new items via clients’ mechanical washers and maintain the integrity of prescribed groups of instruments
  • Bagging of groups of instruments for a specific set type by index
  • Facilitate the changes at point of production by set type and index
  • Track completed sets by type and index in master list or via lead
  • Set title inventories
  • Assist in the scanning or capture of individual set barcode ID’s
  • Utilization of our proprietary tools for recording/capture
  • Applications of small stickers to sets that have been captured
  • Follows Manufacturer's Instructions for Use, along with Department and Hospital Processes and Policies.
  • Maintains good working relationships with vendors, communicating in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates the ability to acquire and utilize a comprehensive understanding of various sterilizers and sterilization methods.
  • Prioritize workload and requests for supplies and trays.
  • Perform environmental maintenance duties and assist in maintaining inventory levels.
  • Work and communicate with clients and customers to satisfy their expectations.
  • Maintains thorough and accurate sterilization documentation and record keeping by maintaining permanent records and test results.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Acceptable Training and Experience:

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Current Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician Certification (CSPDT) or Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) required.
• Broad knowledge base regarding medical/surgical instruments and equipment.
• Basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
• Available for on-call, work weekends, holidays, and rotating shifts as needed.
• Ability to wear appropriate protective attire.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
• Must regularly lift and carry a variety of equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, as well as standing and walking for long periods of time.
