ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND/CULTURE

The Detroit Economic Growth Corporation is a private non-profit organization leading the economic revitalization efforts for Detroit, the most exciting urban recovery in the country. The DEGC works closely with the City of Detroit and other partners to support existing businesses and bring new companies and investments to the City. The DEGC designs and implements innovative solutions that drive investment, create jobs, and build the economy through strong public-private collaborations. The DEGC's commitment to integrity, transparency, and professionalism permeates the organization and undergirds our stature as the economic development authority for the City. The DEGC provides staff services to Detroit’s public development authorities, including The Downtown Development Authority, The Detroit Brownfield Redevelopment Authority, The Economic Development Corporation, The Eight Mile Woodward Corridor Improvement Authority, the Neighborhood Development Corporation, the Local Development Finance Authority, and the Tax Increment Finance Authority.


SUMMARY OF ROLE

The DEGC is seeking an experienced and nimble candidate to join our organization as a Stakeholder Engagement Specialist. The Stakeholder Engagement Specialist is a key member of the marketing and communications team who is responsible for producing and sharing attention grabbing stories about DEGC and our programs. These stories will be shared across a variety of mediums with the purpose of amplifying DEGC’s story and increasing awareness of our work among our community stakeholders and the businesses we serve.

The Stakeholder Engagement Specialist will also build and execute a comprehensive social media strategy encompassing the work of DEGC’s transactional units, Small Business Services and Economic Development & Investment Services. The ideal candidate will be an adept storyteller capable of writing long and short-form copy for all channels, including website, social, email, and print (i.e., brochures, one-pagers, flyers, invitations, newsletters).


KEY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Generate, edit, publish, and share original content that builds meaningful connections with DEGC stakeholders and community members.
    • Attend DEGC programs, events, and press conferences as needed to create rich written and visual storytelling content to highlight DEGC’s various initiatives and successes.
    • Interview staff, community partners, and clients to create engaging content for press releases, publications, social media, and the web.
  • Manage engagement with all social media inquiries, comments, and requests for DEGC accounts.
  • Work closely with program leads and promote the details of upcoming events on social media.
  • Work with the marketing and communications team to brainstorm innovative ways to present and communicate the benefits of our services to our stakeholders and the general public.
  • Assist in drafting and editing copy for all channels, including website, social media, email, and print as directed.
  • Provide necessary website and social media engagement data for monthly, quarterly, and end-of-year reporting.
  • Update contact databases and media lists regularly to ensure they are accurate.
  • Assist DEGC staff in preparing presentations and reports that adhere to DEGC’s brand and messaging guidelines.
  • Track projects and report to the team and director to assist in updates to leadership.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to identify and develop attention-grabbing content that aligns with DEGC's mission and objectives as directed.
  • Assist with the development and execution of digital marketing campaigns and initiatives.
  • Manage and update the DEGC website, ensuring content is accurate, up-to-date, and optimized for search engines.
  • Stay current with social media and web trends, best practices, and technologies to improve our digital presence continuously.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES REQUIRED
  • Bachelor's Degree in marketing, communications, English, public relations, or journalism (or equivalent professional experience).
  • A minimum of 2-3 years experience in marketing or communications.
  • 1-2 years experience managing business social media and a social media calendar strongly preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft 365.
  • Ability to perform digital communication such as social media posting on multiple platforms and adding content to WordPress and WIX websites.
  • Strong working knowledge of Canva, Illustrator, InDesign, or other graphic software.
  • Experience curating content for newsletters and other business communication
  • Must possess a solid understanding of effective marketing techniques.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, with a strong emphasis on storytelling and the ability to adapt content for different platforms and audiences.
  • Experience with public speaking is desirable.
  • Familiarity with data management and communication platforms, including Smartsheet, Salesforce, Constant Contact, or similar platforms.
  • Must be comfortable working through ambiguity to find solutions and achieve desired results.
  • Well organized, with the ability to navigate challenging organizational and procedural hurdles to produce real results under tight timelines.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines while maintaining focus in an environment with conflicting demands and priorities.
  • Passion for Detroit's economic development and a commitment to promoting the city's growth and success.
  • Must be able to take complex information and communicate clearly and concisely, tailoring writing style to the audience.
  • Must be a driven self-starter, creative thinker, and problem-solver who can work independently.
  • High aptitude for and interest in customer service and problem-solving.
  • Must have strong time-management, administrative, and organizational skills, allowing you to excel under pressure and in fast-paced environments.
  • Understands analytics and uses metrics to drive continuous improvement.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate and work effectively with individuals, strengthening relationships to achieve the best possible solutions.
  • Ability to receive and understand direction, ask appropriate questions, and manage time to work effectively and independently.
  • Experience interfacing with internal and external stakeholders and diverse clientele.
  • Ability to engage in frequent, independent travel throughout Detroit.
  • Availability to work a flexible schedule (evenings and weekends) on occasion, with notice, to attend special events and programs.
WORK LOCATION:

DEGC is currently operating on a Hybrid schedule. Candidates should know that all employees must do in-person work at least twice a week. This in-person work includes but is not limited to reporting to the DEGC office, community engagement, and in-person meetings. DEGC reserves the right to terminate the Hybrid work schedule for any individual or all employees at any time, at its sole discretion.

COMPENSATION:

A competitive compensation package will be provided to the successful candidates. The salary range depends on experience and is accompanied by a full range of benefits.
