Job Description

Primary Functions: Under the supervision of the Surgical Technology Program Director and Clinical Coordinator, the Surgical Technology Clinical Instructor will be a clinical resource person for Surgical Technology students and will be responsible for determining individual student case assignments and monitoring and assessing student progress, conducting weekly evaluation conferences with each student, providing guidance and suggestions for student improvement, and completing the weekly Clinical Evaluation Form(s) as warranted. Further, the Surgical Technology Clinical Instructor will upload relevant Clinical Documents into the Students Portfolio contained in Trajecsys.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A.S. Degree in Surgical Technology from an accredited College/University
  • Evidence of Certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
  • Current BLS/CPR Certification
  • A minimum of 2-3 years' experience working as a Surgical Technologist
  • A minimum of 1-2 years' experience serving as a Surgical Technology preceptor

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Healthcare, Healthcare Management, or related field
  • A minimum of 3-5 years' working as a Surgical Technologist
  • Extensive experience in using Microsoft 365
  • Prior experience using/working with Learning Management Systems such as Blackboard, Moodle, or Canvas

  • Demonstrate knowledge and ongoing professional development toward an understanding of advances and developments in discipline as well as with current clinical education methodologies
  • Pursue continuous quality improvements in assigned clinical courses
  • Negotiate and grow cooperative relationships with leaders at clinical experiential learning sites
  • Maintain a collaborative working relationship with other faculty and staff
  • Maintain compliance with required accreditation agency and college staff
  • Engage with faculty, the administrative leadership team, and students in furthering the mission and goals of the Department of Surgical Technology and the college as a whole
  • There may be additional duties assigned as it related to this position

Essential Job Functions:

Job functions include, but are not limited to:

  • Orientation of new Surgical Technology students to the clinical setting, the Policy Manual, and the availability and location of the educational resources - including all safety precautions and emergency protocols as warranted
  • Makes arrangements for the individual preceptor for each student at the clinical site
  • Assigns appropriate cases to each student
  • Alters assignments as necessary to suit student needs
  • Monitors each student's progress throughout the course of the day
  • Makes themselves available for the student's questions and learning needs
  • Promotes patient and student safety
  • Creates a positive and supportive learning environment, including being an advocate for the student's status as a learner
  • Makes systematic observations and objective judgements about student's performance
  • Meets with each student individually once a week to discuss clinical performance
  • Maintains student's clinical evaluation tool located in the electronic student portfolio
  • Evaluates and signs off on all required Clinical Competencies
  • Gives each student timely feedback about the student's performance, providing suggestions for improvement
  • Meets regularly with the Program/Clinical Coordinator to maintain productive two-way communication between the program and Operating Room personnel
  • Discusses student evaluation with each students' preceptor
  • At the end of each rotation, completes a Clinical Evaluation, documenting the progress of each student and discusses the clinical evaluation with each student to provide guidance for future performance
  • Provides feedback to the program about current department/hospital policies or changes in practice in the field and makes suggestions for program modifications or improvement
  • Participates in continuing education seminars and in professional development opportunities to maintain current state-of-the-art knowledge and skills
  • Attend all scheduled Surgical Technology Department Faculty meetings and is prepared to discuss program goals, policies and educational methodologies
  • Maintains CST certification
  • Maintain BLS/CPR certification
  • Measures and documents the student learning outcomes at the end of each semester as per College Policy
