Breeding Trial Intern

We are currently seeking an intern that will work closely with scientists to sow, transplant, and evaluate new hybrid materials under commercial conditions. This is an excellent opportunity for students or recent graduates that are interested in careers in the commercial seed industry, agricultural extension, or agricultural research. *Overnight travel required!

Compensation: $15/hr., 10-30 hours per week, hours will vary weekly

Period: June & July

Territory: Raleigh, NC

Job Requirements

Support scientists to conduct field experiments by accurately and efficiently sowing, transplanting, collecting data, and carrying out other duties as assigned.
Interest in the commercial seed industry and/or agricultural experimentation.
Perform all tasks in accordance with the Health, Safety, and Environment policies.
Availability to travel and stay overnight.
Ability to record and submit expense reports.
Willingness to drive to remote trials and over off-road terrain.
Possess a valid driver’s license. Reimbursement for mileage and fuel provided when traveling to offsite locations.
Ability to lift 50 pounds.
Working Conditions While Performing Essential Functions: Early mornings with potential long days. Conditions are often dirty, dusty, and hot in combination with noisy equipment. Potential allergens-pollen, fungal spores, chemical pesticides in field or greenhouse. Exposure to high and low temperatures, sun, rain, and dust.

Preferred Skills

Understanding of general farm etiquette.
Experience with electronic data collection and field trialing techniques.
Experience with sowing and transplanting.
Familiarity with growing watermelon, squash, cantaloupe, sweet corn, or green beans.
Knowledge of agricultural practices and growing systems in the southeast.
Current student or recent graduate in horticulture, agronomy, agriculture, biology, or related fields encouraged to apply.
