POSITION SUMMARY
The Democracy Campaigner, 8-Month Contract role is a critical part of Greenpeace USA's campaign strategy focused on the lawsuit filed against Greenpeace offices for our solidarity work around the protests at Standing Rock. This trial is key, not only to protecting Greenpeace, but also to protecting the right to protest overall.

The Democracy Campaigner, 8-Month Contract will work with Greenpeace volunteers and supporters, coalition partners and movement allies to plan joint strategies to protect the right to protest and push back against the introduction and passage of state-level anti-protest bills. The campaigner will help coordinate, train and build capacity of volunteers and state-based allies, develop campaign materials, issue updates, action alerts and media materials needed. The Democracy Campaigner is responsible for helping implement strategy while building and maintaining relationships on the ground through grassroots outreach and efforts with communities, state and coalition partners, movement allies.

The Democracy Campaigner, 8-month contract (with the possibility of extension) role is a full-time, exempt, benefits-eligible, hybrid position and is located in any Greenpeace-approved location: (CA, NY Metro area and DC Metro area). This position is represented by the Progressive Workers Union and will report to the Democracy Campaigns Director. Please note this role may require limited travel and occasional work outside of normal business hours.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategy:

  • Implementing fast-paced advocacy, grassroots, digital and communication strategies for voting rights and protest rights.
  • Actively contributing to the democracy campaign goals and helping to implement campaign objectives.
  • Assist in organizing efforts to counter state-level attacks on democracy and the right to protest, such as legislative attempts to criminalize protest or stifle speech through SLAPP lawsuits.
  • Conduct research and assist in data analytics to help inform the right campaign targets that Greenpeace can move
  • Contribute to building individual issue expertise as a campaigner and assisting in the cultivation of issue expertise on climate issues within teams

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Working with coalition partners to maintain and share campaign strategies and resources.
  • Coordinating with Greenpeace US Distributed Organization Team, Digital Engagement staff, to identify and act on state-level strategic opportunities to mobilize Greenpeace's network of supporters and activists.
  • Helping coordinate large and diverse coalitions. Act as a thought partner with state coalition partners, movement allies in pushing our campaign objectives.
  • Maintaining and building relationships with state and local partners in grassroots and grasstops outreach, mobilization and advocacy strategies.
  • Work with GP grassroots, online and engagement staff to identify and act on strategic opportunities to mobilize GP's network of supporters and activists

Outreach and Engagement:

  • Creatively communicate campaign issues, opportunities and interventions, especially through Greenpeace social media channels and via other platforms to reach, inspire and engage our supporters and allies.
  • Represent GPUS among external partners, at public events and work within coalition spaces to further campaign and organizational goals

REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience:

  • BA/BS degree preferred or equivalent educational experience
  • A minimum of - 3 years experience in developing and delivering campaigns
  • Experience working in coalitions, including cross-cultural, cross-movement sector coalitions.
  • ​​Experience in helping implement people-powered or public engagement campaigns preferred.
Required Skills/Abilities/Competencies:
  • Proven understanding of and ability with social media practices, principles and implementation.
  • Organizational skills, including the ability to multiple projects and navigate complex policies and relationships; experience with running fast paced, creative, engaging activist projects and campaigns project administration.
  • Clear understanding of the relationship between digital engagement and campaigning and advocacy and basic implementation skills, including experience with Project Management Tools such as Asana and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tools such as EveryAction, ActionKit, or a similar membership platform (Or if this experience is not deep, eagerness to build these skills).
  • Strong presentation skills, written and oral; comfort speaking to the public, Greenpeace supporters, allies and the media.
  • Commitment to nonviolence as a means of effecting change. Proven track record of reaching and inspiring people online to take action both online and offline.
  • Experience in all phases of implementing campaign strategies and working with coalitions and allies
  • General knowledge of traditional democracy related topics, including campaign finance, voting rights, indigenous sovereignty and/or environmental justice desired but not essential if eager to dive in and learn.
  • A deep belief in the benefit of a participatory, fair and thriving democracy to make the world a better place - and a driving passion to help build that kind of democracy in the U.S.

COMPENSATION

Greenpeace offers a competitive benefits package including medical, dental and vision coverage with low contributions from staff. This role is graded at a level 2 and a salary within the range of $63,410 - $68,632 is anticipated to be provided to the successful candidate having met the minimum requirements for the position consistent with reflecting our commitment to maintaining competitive and fair compensation practices.
