We are a remote-first workplace but the candidates for this role must be resident of Pennsylvania and within commuting distance of Philadelphia, or a resident of New York state and within commuting distance of New York city at the start of employment. About the Opportunity

The People & Culture Regional Director for the U.S. and Canada is a leadership role responsible for overseeing all aspects of human resources operations. This role is also an intermediary with our parent organization, B Lab Global, which is the primary administrator of staff benefits, including health insurance, well-being programs, and retirement benefits. Additionally, through shared services with our parent company, B Lab Global, the Regional Director will also receive support in recruiting, learning and development, staff engagement, and compliance. The ideal candidate will have experience managing remote staff, project management, and policy and procedure development aligned with Equity, Belonging, and Anti-Racism frameworks and principles. The People & Culture Regional Director will report to the B Lab U.S. and Canada CEO with a dotted reporting line to the Global Director of People & Culture.

Core Responsibilities

Organizational Culture & Team Engagement

  • Develop and implement strategies to enhance employee engagement, satisfaction, and retention.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive work culture through effective communication and initiatives.
  • Lead initiatives to promote employee well-being and work-life balance.

Recruitment, Hiring, and Onboarding

  • Partner with B Lab Global to develop and execute recruitment strategies to attract top talent.
  • Partner with B Lab Global on the recruitment process, from job postings to interviewing and hiring.
  • Create and implement effective onboarding programs to ensure smooth transitions for new hires.

Learning and Development

  • Identify training and development needs and partner with B Lab Global's L&D team to design programs to address them.
  • Encourage continuous learning and professional growth among staff.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of training initiatives and make improvements as necessary.

Promotion and Compensation:

  • Develop and manage a fair and competitive compensation and benefits structure.
  • Lead performance management processes, including goal setting and performance reviews, which will include an annual performance evaluation of the CEO, administered by the B Lab U.S. & Canada board.
  • Implement strategies for career progression and development within the organization.

Benefits Administration:

  • Manage the day to day inquiries from employees on benefits programs, including health insurance, wellness initiatives, and retirement plans.
  • Stay current with industry trends and make recommendations for benefit plan improvements.
  • Partner with B Lab Global to ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations related to benefits.

Policy Development and Operational Support

  • Lead and support remote staff effectively, fostering a strong sense of teamwork and collaboration.
  • Implement tools and practices to enable effective remote work.
  • Address remote work-related challenges and concerns.
  • Establish, review, and update HR policies and procedures to ensure compliance and best practices.
  • Communicate and educate employees on policies and procedures.
  • Drive adherence to company policies and handle policy violations when necessary.
  • Liaison with B Lab U.S. & Canada Board Chair and Governance Committee Chair, as needed, with support from Employee Relations counsel to manage risk and compliance with law and regulations.

First-Year Projects Will Include:

  • Administration and evaluation of our twice-yearly calibration, performance review, equity compensation, and promotion processes.
  • Review and update our compensation and career progression matrices and frameworks.
  • Develop and implement learning and development for people managers in budget management, JEDI principles, and innovation.
  • Administration of the organizational culture survey and implementing ways to promote equity and accountability.
  • Review, update, and maintain current HR policy and procedures using the Knowledge Base
  • Develop and implement an employee engagement system
  • Develop and implement a staff complaint management system
About You

We encourage you to apply if you have:

  • A minimum of 7 years of progressive HR experience, including holding leadership roles.
  • Fluency and experience in implementing processes and policies in alignment with Equity, Belonging, and Anti-Racism frameworks.
  • Experience in managing remote teams and understanding the challenges of remote work.
  • Solutions-oriented and able to problem-solve using resourcefulness, innovation and tact
  • Clear, proactive, and inclusive communicator that is able to foster a sense of belonging with individuals at all levels of an organization
  • Ability to earn and build influence across a matrixed organization; to initiate and drive projects and initiatives with a strong people-first framework
  • Highly skilled project manager able to balance competing priorities and varying deadlines simultaneously
  • Agility and comfort with change management and adapting to shifting timelines or the need to accommodate new context

The following qualifications are a plus for candidates:

  • Experience in developing, implementing, and analyzing HR metrics, and making data informed recommendations for people operations improvements.
  • Experience procuring and using HRIS platforms and HR tech stack.
  • Knowledge of employment laws and regulations in both the U.S. and Canada.
  • SHRM or HRCI certification is a plus.
  • Business proficiency in languages other than English is a plus, especially Spanish or French


Compensation Details

B Lab has a compensation plan that includes:

  • An annual salary of $120,700
  • Excellent health benefits package including access to medical, vision and dental coverage
  • Paid time off for vacation - in your first year, you'll start with 15 days (prorated to your start date)
  • Additional paid time off for organizational closures
  • 403(b) with a match of up to 3%
  • After your first year of employment, 40 hours paid time off for community service; paid parental leave; and time and budget for your professional development (we assess this PD budget annually)

Hiring Process

    • Step 1: Participate in a one-way video interview via Spark Hire
    • Step 2: Participate in a 75-minute interview with a panel via Google Meet
    • Step 2: Complete an exercise and participate in a 90-minute interview with a panel via Google Meet to share your exercise submission as well as have a discussion with the panel
