The Investment Company Institute (ICI) is the leading association representing regulated investment funds, including mutual funds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), closed-end funds, and unit investment trusts (UITs) in the United States, and UCITS and similar funds offered to investors in Europe, Asia, and other jurisdictions. ICI also represents its members on issues involving the capital markets, separately managed accounts (SMAs) and collective investment trusts (CITs). ICI’s mission is to strengthen the foundation of the asset management industry for the ultimate benefit of the long-term individual investor.


ICI currently has a Research Assistant (RA) position available in our Industry & Financial Analysis department. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual who has an interest in economics or finance as this person provides research assistance to the assistant director, senior economists, and senior director. Under their direction, the Research Assistant analyzes economic, financial, and fund industry developments and trends.


Essential functions of this role include:

  • Assists in economic and finance research projects by creating databases using data from the Institute and external sources and running econometric and statistical programs.
  • Accesses, retrieves, and works with survey or statistical data from the Institute or external sources.
  • Helps to ensure the accuracy and reliability of data collected and used in research projects.
  • Collects and enters data and helps maintain databases.
  • Prepares charts and tables for presentations and publications.
  • Undertakes other tasks as directed by senior staff.

If you have the following credentials, we encourage you to apply:

  • An undergraduate degree in economics, finance, math, or other quantitative field.
  • Previous internships or research assistantships in economics helpful but not required.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy; ability to take initiative and work independently.
  • Demonstrated strength in math as shown by coursework in math and/or statistics.
  • Good organizational and analytical skills; ability to multitask and meet rigid deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills necessary to develop and maintain cooperative relationships with departmental staff.
  • Working knowledge of Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for statistical programming; knowledge of R, Python, Matlab, SQL, or Stata a plus but not required.
  • Ability to interact with other Institute staff, member representatives, and outside vendors in collaborative research efforts.
