The San Marcos Unified School District offers paid Vacation, Holidays, and Sick Leave.

Employees new to the District are allowed salary schedule placement credit for up to two (2) years of previous experience with a maximum salary schedule entry placement for step three (3).

Position Goal

The goal of this position is to perform skilled work in installing, inspecting, repairing, and maintaining refrigeration, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, systems and equipment. 

Performance Responsibilities

This job description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all the duties, knowledge, or abilities associated with this position, but it is intended to accurately reflect the primary elements. Duties may vary amongst various job locations. Incumbents may perform any combination of the essential job functions listed below. *Denotes an essential job function.

1. Troubleshoot, maintain, repair and install heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and systems (e.g., condensers, evaporators, water cooling towers, motors, air handling units, exhaust fans, furnaces, boilers, reciprocating chillers, pumps, kitchen equipment, ducting, thermostats, valves, dampers, economizers and related controls, DDC, and monitoring systems, etc.) to ensure occupant comfort and proper indoor air quality. * 2. Adjust, repair or replace defective parts (e.g., electrical components, electronic and pneumatic controls, thermostats, metering devices, heater controls and anticipators, pressure controls, safety valves, automatic gas valves, motor controllers, magnetic starters, combustion air blowers, switches relays, etc.) * 3. Connect motors to control panels and control panels to power sources; connect and disconnect wiring from a variety of power systems. * 4. Test systems for leaks, faults and loss of pressure, evacuates and purges refrigerants from systems, recharging units as necessary. * 5. Maintain records of refrigerant recovery and recycling in compliance with Environmental Protection Agency regulations. * 6. Test systems by utilizing pressure tests; air balancing air conditioning systems; test joints and insulate pipes pertaining to heating, venting, air conditioning and refrigeration systems. * 7. Fabricate, repair, and install ductwork and covers. * 8. Perform skilled repair on large multi zone systems, compressors, boilers and related equipment. * 9. Perform preventative maintenance tasks on assigned equipment. 10. Under the direction of a supervisor, may provide training and guidance to assigned staff.* 11. Work from computerized maintenance management software to plan and organize assignments effectively; estimate labor and material costs. * 12. Work from blueprints and specifications to comply with District plans; document a variety of work activities (e.g., job orders, preventive maintenance performed, purchases, inspections, problems encountered, issues pending, etc.). * 13. Research and prepare material and labor cost estimates and makes recommendations regarding replacement of outdated equipment, etc. * 14. Maintain shop including cleaning and organizing tools and shop equipment; maintain inventory and orders HVACR parts and related supplies. * 15. Observe work of outside contractors to obtain information for subsequent maintenance of vendor-installed systems, or, when directed, to provide information to the district about a contractor's job completion status. * 16. Inspect new construction for conformity to District standards; advise and recommend standards. * 17. Assist and coordinate with other skilled trades to complete work assignments. * 18. Guide the performance of assigned maintenance staff to ensure in-house projects are completed in a timely manner and according to specifications. * 19. Safely operate a district vehicle to various job sites and transports a variety of tools, equipment and supplies. Load and unload vehicles; transport, lift, and carry tools, equipment and supplies. * 20. Maintain current knowledge of methods, materials, and technologies of the trade by attending meetings and educational seminars. * 21. Contact school and site personnel regarding maintenance or repair needs. * 22. Perform other job related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of: 1. Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in the maintenance, repair, and operation of HVAC-R equipment and systems 2. Building codes related to the HVAC-R trade 3. Repair techniques such as soldering, welding, and brazing used in repairing HVAC-R systems 4. Applicable electrical codes and other codes associated with HVACR systems 5. Job-related computer software applications 6. General plumbing and carpentry skills 7. Safe working methods and precautions 8. Record keeping techniques

Ability to: 1. Skillfully install, repair, maintain, and overhaul refrigeration, ventilation, heating, and air conditioning equipment 2. Solder, weld, braze, and use other skills related to HVAC-R system installation and repair 3. Install, troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair HVAC-R systems 4. Operate and maintain specialized equipment and tools utilized in the repair and maintenance of HVAC-R systems 5. Make effective decisions in determining course of action 6. Work from blueprints, sketches or diagrams 7. Estimate materials and supply needs 8. Make mathematical calculations 9. Perform tasks safely 10. Maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work 11. Follow oral and written instructions 12. Work independently with minimal supervision 13. On occasion, may receive calls after hours in emergency situations 14. Perform significant physical tasks including lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, and handling

Education and Experience

1. High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent

2. Three years of job-related experience in the HVAC-R trade, preferred

License(s), Certification(s), and other Requirements

1. Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance
2. Valid California Driver’s License
3. Valid Driver’s License DMV (H-6) printout
4. Possession of, or obtain within six months of employment, a current EPA certification District will provide reimbursement for certification (application fee and/or exam fee) in order to earn/maintain certification.
