Job Overview

As a part of the Revenue Accounting and Financial Controls Department, the Senior Accountant is responsible for recording, reconciling, and monitoring revenue from various Harris County departments. In this role, you will need to process large amounts of data for reporting, so we need someone who is highly accurate, analytical, and self-motivated with a knack for problem solving!

With general supervision from the Manager, Revenue Accounting and according to the policies and procedures of Harris County, the Senior Accountant will:


  • Review and analyze complex accounting templates.
  • Communicate with department to ensure timeliness, accuracy, and completeness of general ledger accounting information.
  • Ensure accurate compilation, analysis, and reporting of accounting data in PeopleSoft.
  • Perform revenue trend and variance analysis.
  • Generate and distribute monthly revenue reports and financial forecasts.
  • Participate in month-end and year-end closing process, including journal entries with supporting documentation, report preparation and distribution and related reconciliations.


Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or other related field with a minimum of 24 hours of accounting coursework
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation or currently on CPA track preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum of three years of relevant and progressive accounting experience
  • Experience in fund accounting is preferred.
  • Experience in governmental accounting is preferred.
  • PeopleSoft experience is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)

  • Excellent verbal, listening and written communication skills.
  • Strong ability to plan and organize workload, perform under pressure, and meet deadlines.
  • High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Excellent problem solving, decision making, and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in the use of MS Office with an emphasis Microsoft Excel.
  • Willingness to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Exemplary interpersonal skills that will facilitate productive working relationships with internal Harris County departments and management as well as external stakeholders and auditors.
  • Keen understanding of Generally Accepted Account Principles (GAAP) and Government Accounting and Standards Board (GASB) standards.

Nature of Work

  • Physical requirements for the position are the ability to sit for extended periods of time and the ability to push/pull, lift and carry up to 40 lbs.
  • Hybrid-telework | Monday - Friday | 40 hrs. per week
  • May be required to work more than forty hours during the workweek or on weekends when special projects or deadlines need to be met.
