Job Description

Cold Calling and Email Blasts are Dead; or Why Your first Sales/Business Development Job Out of College Will Porbably Suck.

- A Solilloquy by the Managing Director of a newly formed international business consultancy:

Sales and Business Development jobs in any industry can be fun, thrilling, never boring and incredibly lucrative....but usually only after about 3-5 years of them being dull, soul crushing and poorly paid.  The reason why is because you'll likely be reporting to someone who had to go through those 3-5 years of hell themselves and they only reason they did it because their first boss also had to do it.  As Kurt Vonnegut would say: So it goes...

Executives and the business media these days seem to never pass up an opportunity to sale that Gen Zs and Millenials are lazy, or entitled, or worst of all-  seeking to have a life outside of work and wanting a living wage.  That last one really grinds their gears.

What they don't realize is that younger job seekers see the world more clearly than they do, the world of business has changed and as such younger workers are merely a reflection of that change and change scares bosses. If they had to spend some of the prime years of their life making 100 cold calls a day with hardly any success or money to show for it then they INSIST you should have to do the same.

(FFS, I'm 41 and I don't pick up any number I don't recognize and even if I do I answer with "yo next time text me before you do that!")

I want to change the Coffee Is For Closers/Smile and Dial way of doing things.  Evolve or die.  A rule as true in business as it is in nature.

I am seeking a summer intern for a new grad or current university Junior that would like to help my newly founded business evolve.  I am not seeking a "direct report" I am seeking a protege and partner, and ideally that person would like a mentor with 25 years experience in international business on four continents and in 4 industry verticals all involving some type of sales, BD, relationship management, communications/PR/Ivestor Relations and business strategy.

It will be less learn by doing than learn by, you know, learning.  I will bring knowledge and experience to the table and you'll bring insight and fresh ideas on how communication in general has changed and how to identify, research and connect with potential clients in new ways.

And in case the tone of this job ad wasn't clear, I'll also bring jokes and an open mind.

This would be a 1099 role at first, with the potential to go full time W2 as you and I work together on a go to market strategy and prepare to formally launch the business in the Autumn of 2024.

The ideal candidate would be based in Chicago or be able to relocate to Chicago in May of 2025 if the relationship works and I decide to bring you on full time.

I look forward to hearing from some awesome candidates!

Home base for me is Phnom Penh, Cambodia but I also work out of Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and Brisbane Australia.
