Job OverviewThe Project Manager (PM) has two distinct roles – a project-focused Project Manager and a people-focused Team Leader.Under the people-focused Team Leader role, the PM is responsible for developing the people on the team. Developing the team includes coaching, mentoring, on-the-job training, encouraging people, holding people accountable, explaining the “why” behind what we do, and teaching the team “the FDS way” for work. Ultimately, the PM is doing much of the hands-on training of the next generation of project managers for the firm.
Responsibilities and DutiesProject proposals / pursuits – plays a significant role (along with Principal) in pursuing project QBS proposals including participating in interview preparation and presentation; takes the lead in developing fee proposal letters (scope, schedule, fee)
Project schedule – develops the project schedule and establishes all project milestones; then manages and communicates schedule updates to the project team (internal and external) throughout the course of the project – being responsible to bring the project in on schedule
Communication – functions at the primary point of communication for the firm for the project
Site layout and schematic design – establishes the project parameters and develops the initial schematic layout / solution for each project; then communicates this to the team to steer project
Design guidance – provides ‘senior technical guidance’ to the project team
Specifications – handles the preparation of tech specs or guides the PE on pulling them together
Quality assurance (QA) – guides the team on following standards and walking the project through well-established patterns to get predictably positive outcomes
Quality control (QC) – reviews the work products at prescribed points along the project development process and provides markups and guidance to the team
Invoicing – responsible for preparing the monthly invoices and for tracking project performance
Develop the team - coaches, mentors, and trains the individuals on the team
Team meetings – holding regularly scheduled weekly team meetings with the project team to discuss short-term objectives, deadlines, and priorities
Cross-team coordination – meets weekly with the principals and other PMs to review firm-wide progress, priorities, and production efforts
Qualifications
· Education level.
Bachelor’s Degree in civil engineering or related field
· Experience.
Deep familiarity with construction plan-set preparation and project delivery process
Experience running multiple projects at one time
Preferred previous PM experience
· Personal characteristics.
Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving skills; strategic thinking ability
Time management skills
Excellent communication and customer service skills, including conflict resolution
Ability to lead team and maximize output while providing positive team experience
People-skills to understand the people on the team and how to guide and grow them
· Licenses
Hold a PE license
