Overview
The Development Department at The New York Public Library raises funds from private sources to support the mission and vision of The New York Public Library. The team is made up of a dynamic group of development and events professionals who together represent expertise in all areas of fundraising, including individual, corporate, foundation and government grants, special events, membership, planned giving, and systems management. The Development Department raises over $20 million in Annual Fund and more than $80 million overall each year. 

The Manager, Development Events will play an integral role on the Individual Giving team. The Manager’s primary responsibilities include the planning, preparation, and execution of high profile fundraising events such as the Library Lions Gala and the Library Lunch as well as other special donor and membership events as needed. The Development Events team raises $4 million in support of the Library annually. 

We are looking for someone we can count on to:

Own:
  • Planning and execution of the Library’s two primary fundraising events – Library Lions and the Library Lunch
Teach:
  • Donors about the Library’s mission and values
Learn:
  • Strategic priorities of Development and the Library
Improve:
  • Processes to increase fundraising and create new and exciting events to engage and cultivate donors
Some expectations for this role are that within:

1 month, this person will:
  • Meet Development staff and other key internal stakeholders (Special Events, Public Programs, and Procurement) and understand NYPL organizational structure
  • Become familiar with event policies, procedures, and timelines
3 months, this person will:
  • Oversee a portfolio of select Development events
  • Actively participate in meetings and provide speaker and honoree suggestions for upcoming events
  • Engage with donors and honorees at events as well as via email and phone 
6 months and beyond, this person will:
  • Lead planning for upcoming fundraising events
  • Improve upon processes as needed
Responsibilities
  • Manage the Library’s two primary fundraising events – Library Lions and the Library Lunch, as well as help as needed on all Development events 
  • Alongside third-party vendors and other internal teams, produce all printed and electronic materials for events, including invitations, programs, websites, and donor letters
  • Research relevant and engaging event speakers and donor prospects; manage speakers and honorees after they are secured
  • Develop and implement outreach and solicitation strategies for Development Events
  • Work closely with Individual Giving and Research to identify new event leadership prospects as well as donor prospects (corporate and individual) relating to Development Events
  • Process gifts and maintain donor records in fundraising database
  • Assume responsibilities for special projects and perform related duties as needed

Required Education, Experience & Skills
Required Education & Certifications
Bachelor’s degree
Required Experience
5-7 years related experience; fundraising experience required
Required Skills
  • Strong project management skills and ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and stakeholders
  • A proven record of creating and fostering excellent relationships with all levels of staff, donors, and the public, and the ability to exercise good judgment
  • Demonstrated accuracy, attention to detail, flexibility, and reliability
  • Proficient experience using Raiser’s Edge or other comparable CRM programs
  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Word and Excel and a working knowledge of social media
  • High degree of initiative, organization, and follow-through
  • Able to work independently and effectively under pressure
  • Superior written communication and interpersonal skills
Managerial/Supervisory Responsibilities
  • In the absence of the Associate Director, The Manager, Development Events will assume leadership responsibilities of the Development Events team
