Job Description

Job Summary:

The Outpatient Counselor will provide counsel and support to patients suffering from drug or alcohol dependency, educate families in the best ways to help in the recovery process, and work with both inpatient clients and those participating in outpatient programs.

Essential Job Duties:

  1. Meets with clients to obtain personal information and medical histories and consults with other professionals to get a clear picture of the client’s status and extent of problems.
  2. Designs a program of treatment and rehabilitation tailored to the client's individual situation based on knowledge of alcohol and drug dependency and counseling and treatment methods.
  3. Uses a combination of individual and group counseling sessions to help clients and observes their attitudes and readiness to accept help and guidance.
  4. Meets with family members to educate them on the roles they can play in the recovery process.
  5. Educates clients about community-based organizations such as Alcoholics Anonymous and social and employment services that may help restore them to productive roles in the community.
  6. Maintains case histories and progress reports. Modifies treatment programs based on observation.
  7. Completes acceptable documentation on treatment for medical billing purposes to ensure payment from MCOs for services rendered in a timely fashion.
  8. Assists clients with coping with family problems and recommends appropriate social services as support for the entire family unit.
  9. Participates as a member of a multi-disciplinary team to provide treatment for clients.
  10. Provides face to face services including diagnostic assessments.
  11. Accurately documents all clinical activities in a timely manner per agency standards.
  12. Provides linkage and advocacy for clients with community agencies/resources including a community transition plan.
  13. Participates in individual and group supervision.
  14. Maintains client forms and records in compliance with agency, HIPAA, CARF, and OHMAS standards.
  15. Participates in quality improvement activities and promotes continuous improvement.
  16. Performs administrative duties such as completing documentation, i.e. progress notes, reports, evaluations, chart reviews, etc.
  17. Maintains confidentiality of all client and agency information.
  18. Attends staff meetings and/or reviews monthly staff meeting minutes.
  19. Attends workshops, seminars, and/or agency trainings to stay current on trends in chemical dependency, dual diagnosis, behavioral health counseling, and federal, state, and local regulations required to maintain licensure.
  20. Completes trainings as instructed by administration.
  21. Ensures maintenance of certifications by obtaining continuing education requirements for professional licensure.
  22. Performs other duties that may become necessary or as directed by your supervisor.

Competencies:

Comprehensive Diagnostic Assessment, Behavioral Health Counseling Group & Individual, Lethality/Risk Assessment, Case Consultation and/or Coordination, Psychoeducation, Relapse Prevention; Listening skills, Problem Solving, Stress Management, Interpersonal and Teamwork skills, Project Management, Organization skills with the ability to plan and prioritize work activities.

Educational/Experience Requirements

  1. Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work or related field.
  2. State of Ohio LPCC or LISW licensure required. Supervision designation preferred.
  3. Minimum of three years clinical experience, preferably in the chemical dependency or mental health fields.
  4. CPR and First Aid certifications, and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training a plus.
  5. Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word and Excel, and other EHR systems.

Position Type/Hours

This is a full-time position, and hours of work and days are generally Monday through Friday[LM1] , 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., but flexible as evening or weekend hours.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is sedentary most of the day and requires occasional standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and stooping. Occasionally the position requires walking to/from various buildings. The employee may infrequently lift items up to 15 pounds.
