Job Title: Volunteer & Community Outreach Program Coordinator

Status: Full Time; Non-Exempt (40 hrs/wk)

Reports To: Director of Operations

Position Summary:

The Volunteer & Community Outreach Program Coordinator (VCOPC) is responsible for the recruitment, education/training, supervision, and retention of volunteers to assist HSCC employees in the efficient operation of the shelter. The VCOPC develops, implements and coordinates all aspects of HSCC’s existing and emerging volunteer programs including scheduling, managing volunteer orientation and training programs for animal care, keeping a robust pipeline of volunteers to serve  organizational needs. This position coordinates existing HSCC community outreach programs such as the Free Pet Food Shelf and the Pet Helpline. In addition to current program oversight, the VCOPC researches, plans and helps to implement additional community assistance programs that support HSCC’s mission of keeping pets and their owners together. To achieve this the VCOPC works closely with the Directors of Operations, Development and Communications and the Community Pet Clinic medical team.


Essential Volunteer Responsibilities: 

  • Coordinating and overseeing volunteers for a wide range of organizational needs
  • Recruiting, educating/training, supervising, and scheduling shelter operations and event volunteers
  • Designing and marketing volunteer opportunities, with the assistance of the Communications Manager
  • Managing HSCC’s volunteer database and processing volunteer applications
  • Onboarding, motivating, supervising, supporting, and dismissing volunteers as needed
  • Publicizing and hosting at least one volunteer orientation per month to onboard new volunteers
  • Collecting and assessing volunteer feedback for use in program evaluation
  • Planning and executing annual volunteer celebration/appreciation event
  • Responding to general volunteer inquiries by email


Essential Community Outreach Responsibilities:

  • Actively promoting HSCC’s mission, services, program, and events, adhering to HSCC policies and guidelines
  • Reaching out to businesses, service and community organizations and presenting HSCC’s mission, resources, and volunteer needs
  • Planning and implementing the Helen Kerr Humane Education Series with 4 speakers per year
  • Managing and tracking all requests received by HSCC’s Helpline
  • Organizing and publicizing community outreach events such as rabies clinics
  • Creating content for surrender prevention resources to publish on HSCC’s website and provide to the community
  • Contributing relevant content to HSCC’s newsletters

  • Seasoned management capability with a demonstrated ability to take initiative, direct, lead, and offer support
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills with the ability to multi-task
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Advanced computer and social media literacy
  • Compassion for animals and human beings, and commitment to the mission, values, and goals of HSCC
  • Knowledge of or interest in animal welfare
  • Able to work well under pressure, in sometimes highly charged situations, and handle multiple personalities politely and professionally while ensuring efficiency
  • Ability to positively interact with colleagues, coworkers, and community members from widely varied backgrounds with integrity and honesty throughout all facets of the position, maintaining confidentiality at all times
  • Willingness to work as a team member and pitch in as needed


Required Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree (equivalent work experience may be considered)
  • Community program and volunteer development experience
  • Previous animal care experience a plus but not required
