About Our Program

Ädelbrook’s Academies are private special education programs certified by the State Department of Education to serve students with autism, neurodevelopmental disorders, emotional disturbance, and learning disabilities from pre-Kindergarten through grade 12. Ädelbrook’s Transitional Academy, for students ages 18–21, focus on life-long learning and life skills, and employment proficiencies through meaningful work experiences and community engagement.

Job Summary:

Responsible for maintaining the budgeted census at the Cromwell Academy, including oversight of pre-placements, referrals, and communication with all interested parties. Using the Positive Behavior Support system, oversees management of student behavior, including resolution of disciplinary issues and use of Psychological and Physical Management (PMT). Assists in the development of new or improved programs and curriculum, ensuring effectiveness in serving the needs of all students. Assists the Director of Education in the supervision and performance evaluation of the Cromwell Academy staff and with other programs/projects, as requested. Reports directly to the Director of Education. Works collaboratively with Director regarding CSDE criteria established for approval of private special education facilities and maintains This is a full time, exempt position.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Review the appropriateness of day students for the education programs. Ensures appropriate and individualized educational programming and discharge planning for all students.
  • Monitor the arrival and dismissal of all-day students to ensure safety.
  • Serves as behavioral resource for the Academy; consults with staff to prepare Functional Behavior Assessments to develop Behavior Intervention Plans; determines appropriate action in cases of serious behavioral incidents.
  • Participate in the Building Leadership Team, Administrative Meetings, and other meetings as necessary.
  • Serve as a resource for teachers and all educational staff particularly on development and implementation of behavior management, crisis management and effective education programing.
  • Act as a resource to all Academy personnel regarding curriculum, instruction, assessment and IEP implementation/progress monitoring.
  • Assist the Director of Education in the ongoing development, administration and dissemination of information regarding all Academy programs, including professional development for staff.
  • Develop, implement, and facilitate professional learning opportunities for all staff.
  • Represent the Academy at PPT’s. Ensure appropriate educational discharge planning for students and coordinate educational programming through the PPT process.
  • Foster and maintain good public relations image consistent with the Connecticut Code of Professional Standards for School Administrators
  • Assist the Director of Education in the development of Academy budget, as requested.
  • Assist in the creation and implementation of forms and data collection instruments to record academic and behavioral performance while providing oversight for quarterly progress reporting and IEP progress monitoring. Assistant Director of Education, Cromwell.
  • Provide oversight for Critical Incident Reports, Medical, Discrete Trial Instruction, debriefings and complete state reporting as needed.
  • Supervise select staff and complete required performance evaluations in a timely fashion; including teacher evaluation process per CSDE and related supervision documents.
  • Work collaboratively with Ädelbrook departments to ensure success of school programs.
  • Assume teaching responsibilities in a classroom when appropriate staffing needs to be ensured
  • Interview new candidates for certified staff positions and provide feedback on candidates following interviews and shadowing experiences to the Director of Education.
  • Attend all scheduled after school and evening Academy functions, as requested by the Director of Education.
  • Consult with parents or guardians of students, LEAs and other involved persons as regards behavior management and educational issues.
  • Train and utilize PMT techniques to ensure a safe and therapeutic environment in the school setting. This includes physical intervention through protective hold defined by SDE as emergency restraints (utilizing PMT) and/or emergency seclusions, in accordance with CT state regulations as well as agency procedure if a young person is attempting to hurt her/himself or another human being.
  • Stay abreast of policies and changes in the field of Special Education especially as they affect private placements; convey changes and their expected effects on the agency management and professional learning opportunities.
  • Display exemplary role modeling on the job.
  • Assist the Director of Education with additional projects/programs, as requested.

Education, Experience, and Qualifications:

Master’s Degree. Minimum three (3) years related experience. Must hold Connecticut Department of Education, Intermediate Certification (092), as well as Special Education or related services endorsement. Excellent written and verbal skills. Skills in the following areas are highly desirable: curriculum development, administration, instructional leadership, group dynamics; demonstrated ability to effectively analyze and utilize data to drive instruction and organizational decision-making; ability and eagerness to champion young people in their ability to learn using various methods of differentiated instruction; commitment to the vision, mission, values, goals, and policies of Ädelbrook. Must possess knowledge of effective behavior management systems, including Positive Behavior Support, and the ability to impart such knowledge to others. Assistant Director of Education, Cromwell must be self-assured and possess a track record that reflects sound judgment and a demonstrated ability to establish rapport with students, colleagues and staff from diverse ethnic, religious, and economic backgrounds. Must be able to function as a part of a team and to demonstrate flexibility in meeting program needs as they occur. Pre-service training in PMT is required.
